the building boom continues: we’re building the next generation of living and learning facilities at umass amherst, including a renovated student union, a 70,000 square foot addition to the isenberg school of management, the new physical sciences building, the new worcester commons, and the john w. olver design building, a showcase of cutting-edge, sustainable construction.

research powerhouse. our research expenditures in fiscal 2018 totaled $211.1 million. among massachusetts colleges and universities, umass amherst ranks fourth in research grants from the national science foundation, behind only mit, harvard, and boston university.

devoted to diversity. umass amherst has a rich history in support of social justice and in efforts to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion on our campus. our lgbtq center and our women’s center, for example, were among the first established in the nation. and we offer more than 100 academic courses on diversity-related topics.

loyal alumni. the university recently completed the most successful private fundraising effort in the history of public higher education in the commonwealth. thanks to more than 103,000 alumni and friends, the campaign handily exceeded its $300 million goal, raising a total of $379 million.

top residential honors college. our commonwealth honors college recruits the best and the brightest, with average sats at 1411/1600 and average gpas at 4.29. in 2013, we opened a six-building honors complex for living and learning.

brilliant professors. twelve umass amherst scholars are among the world’s most highly cited researchers, according to a 2018 survey by clarivate analytics, owner of web of science. this year’s list includes five more than the seven named in 2017.

top-tier athletics. umass has 21 ncaa division i sports teams. ice hockey dominated the headlines in 2019: the team advanced to the national championship game; coach greg carvel was named national coach of the year; cale makar earned the hobey baker award as the best player in the ncaa, the first ever winner from umass; and three teammates were selected in the 2019 nhl draft. student athletes also showed academic prowess, with 307 named to the 2018-19 a-10 commissioner’s honor roll.
